Relief International (RI) selected ISG to perform a final evaluation of the “Economically Empowering Widows in Iraq (EEWI)” Programme. Responding to the marginalized status of many widows in Baghdad, Basra, Kirkuk and Sulaimania, RI worked with local NGO partners to operate Training and Employment Centers (TECs). These centers empowered widows by providing training (literacy, computer, vocational), connections to employers and apprenticeship opportunities and access to microcredit.
ISG analyzed the effectiveness of the program based on a logic model, identified challenges and lessons learned, and developed recommendations to inform future interventions. Building on an approach refined through dozens of past projects in Iraq (many involving women’s empowerment), ISG used a tailored, participatory approach that involved extensive desk review, key informant interviews and focus group discussions.
