Focus Group Analysis in Jordan

The goal of the Strengthening Family Planning Project, managed and led by Abt Associates is to “expand the access, quality, and utilization of family planning services.” Expected outcomes in direct support of increased use of family planning (FP) are a) strengthened JAFPP management and governance systems; b) increased demand for and access to private sector/non-governmental organization (NGO) services; c) improved quality of Family Planning / Reproductive Health (FP/RH) services at Family Planning and Protection (JAFPP) and UNRWA clinics; d) expanded method mix and product choice in the private/NGO sectors; and e) increased JAFPP financial self-sufficiency. The program will contribute to increased availability and use of modern contraceptive methods, a reduction in the current high rates of discontinuation and a reduction in unmet need.

The Ta’ziz project has conducted a quantitative survey of 300 respondents, including users, non-users, and former users of 17 JAFPP clinics. The survey has the following objectives:

  • To understand client perception of JAFPP service quality
  • To understand client and non-client profiles and reasons for using/not using services

Findings from the survey has guided the Strengthening Family Planning Project team in identifying topics requiring further exploration through focus group discussions (FGDs).

ISG deployed an Amman-based study leader and a FGD facilitator for Amman, Kerak and Baqa’a. ISG implemented FGDs in Amman and other parts of Jordan, each based on random samples prepared in coordination with the local community based organizations that worked closely with ISG to prepare the FGDs. And, in some cases randomly and on the spot.
